Getting married this summer? Here’s what I’d tell you in my consultation room

A practical wedding skin timeline from Lacey, including when I’d start planning treatments and what I’d leave well alone as the day gets closer.

If you’re getting married this summer, firstly, congratulations. And secondly, please don’t leave your skin until the week before the wedding. I say that with love.

Wedding planning has a funny way of making skin suddenly feel like another thing that needs to be “fixed”. You start noticing things you hadn’t worried about before, friends recommend treatments, social media starts serving you bridal skincare routines, and before long there’s a very long list of things you’re apparently supposed to do before you walk down the aisle.

If you were sitting in my consultation room, I’d tell you something much simpler. We don’t need to do everything. We need to work out what matters to you, look at the time we have, and make a plan that gives your skin plenty of time to respond.

Here in Nelson and Tasman, wedding season really starts gathering pace from November and continues through summer. So if your wedding is coming up, now is a very sensible time to start that conversation.

Your Nelson wedding skin timeline

How far away is your wedding?

Start with your wedding date, not a treatment

The first question I’d ask you isn’t, “What treatment would you like?” It’s, “When are you getting married?”

From there, I’d want to know how your skin is behaving now, what you’re using at home, whether there’s anything in particular you’d like some help with and, importantly, what you don’t want. Some people want to work on skin texture or pigmentation.

Others are thinking about hydration or simply want their skin to feel healthy and well looked after.

And some people arrive thinking they need a whole treatment plan when a few thoughtful changes to their home skincare may be enough.

That’s why I’d always rather see you earlier. Time gives us options.

If your wedding is 6+ months away

This is the lovely position to be in. We have time to understand your skin, make gradual changes and see how it responds without rushing anything.

This is where I’d start with your home skincare and talk about anything you’d like to support, such as texture, pigmentation or hydration. Depending on your skin, we might also discuss a course of microneedling or professional skin peels, rather than trying to squeeze treatments into the final weeks.

If laser skin rejuvenation is part of the conversation, I plan that earlier too. At Luminous Skin, laser skin rejuvenation is a winter treatment, and I generally allow around three months before a wedding. If your wedding is in summer, that makes the winter months the time to have that conversation rather than waiting until wedding season is underway.

A good treatment plan isn’t about doing as much as possible. It’s about choosing what makes sense for your skin and spacing things appropriately. Book your wedding skin consultation

If your wedding is 3–6 months away

There’s still plenty we can work with, but this is where I become a little more selective. If Profhilo or another skin booster is appropriate for you, I generally like to begin around four months before the wedding. That gives us time to follow the treatment plan properly rather than trying to rush it close to the day.

Microneedling may also sit within this part of the plan. For a course of treatments, I’d rather start three to six months out and leave around four weeks after the final treatment before the wedding.

Professional skin peels can be planned through the cooler months too, but there’s an important seasonal consideration here: I finish peel treatments in November. If peels are something we’re considering for a summer wedding, I want them planned before then rather than added at the last minute.

It doesn’t mean months of constant appointments. Sometimes the plan is surprisingly simple. What matters is that we have enough time to see how your skin responds and adjust if we need to. Book your wedding skin consultation

If your wedding is 6–12 weeks away

Now I’m thinking less about starting things and more about refining what we already know works for you.

If you already have an established treatment routine, we can talk about what makes sense to continue. If this is the first time I’m seeing you, I’ll take the shorter timeframe into account and be more conservative about what I recommend.

If dermal filler is something you’re considering, I’d want at least four to six weeks before the wedding, and preferably two to three months if it’s your first treatment. This gives time for any initial swelling or bruising to settle and avoids making a first-time treatment a last-minute decision.

The closer we get to the wedding, the less interested I am in experimentation. Book your wedding skin consultation

If your wedding is 3–4 weeks away

At this point, we’re protecting the work we’ve already done. This isn’t the moment I want you suddenly introducing every active ingredient you’ve seen recommended online or booking a treatment you’ve never experienced before.

For an established client, anti-wrinkle treatment may sit around three to four weeks before the wedding, depending on your usual treatment plan. If you’ve never had it before, I’d rather have that conversation earlier so we have plenty of time to understand how you respond.

At this stage, my focus is keeping things calm, consistent and predictable. Your wedding month has enough surprises in it already. Your skin doesn’t need to provide another one. Book your wedding skin consultation

Wedding week? Keep it boring.

By wedding week, I don’t want to be doing anything clever with your skin. I want it doing exactly what we expected it to do.

Stick with the products we know, don’t suddenly borrow your bridesmaid’s new exfoliating serum, and please don’t book something you’ve never tried before because you’ve decided your skin needs “one last boost”.

If we’ve planned well, this should be the easy bit.

What about cosmetic treatments?

If cosmetic treatments are something you already have, or something you’d like to discuss before your wedding, we can factor them into the wider plan rather than treating them as a last-minute appointment.

The same principle applies: your wedding shouldn’t be the first time we discover how your skin or face responds to something new. We’ll talk about what you’re comfortable with, what you want to achieve and the appropriate timing for you.

And yes, we can talk about the bridal party too

Bridesmaids, mums, partners and other members of the wedding party often decide they’d like to give their skin a little attention too. I’m very happy to help with that.

But I wouldn’t automatically put everyone on the same treatment plan. Your mum’s skin isn’t your skin. Your bridesmaid’s concerns may be completely different from yours. One face. Every visit. applies here too.

Everyone deserves advice based on their own skin rather than a bridal package designed for six completely different people.

The best wedding skin plan is usually the least dramatic one

If there’s one thing I’d love you to take away from this, it’s that preparing your skin for your wedding doesn’t need to become another enormous project. Start early enough that we don’t have to rush. Keep your skincare consistent. Don’t introduce five new products because social media told you to. And don’t feel as though you need every treatment on the menu.
